As an Taiwanese American in America there’s an image of Asians as the perpetual foreigner. “Where are you from?” is a question I get asked at least once a week from strangers. As a mother of two little ones, I do not want my kids to have the same experience. But, how do I help that? The little girl in the painting pretends to be a superhero. She is powerful. While I am wearing a traditional Chinese dress. Can I still teach her Asian cultural identity in a country where people ask us where we are from? Our eyes are closed, but hopeful. What are her dreams for herself? What are my dreams for her, for us, and for us?
